The author’s grandfather, Grayson Offord, whose 7th great grandfather was Captain John Clay who landed in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1613,  wrote letters to his aunt, uncle and cousin all about his training for World War I. He got as far as New Jersey when his company got word that the war was over.
