The first time you click on the Members Only Menu Genealogy tab you will come to a new website page just like the image above.
This is an entirely different website run on software called The Next Generation (TNG). Within TNG system this page is known as the Public Home Page. It is the only page that is available to non-CFS members, i.e. “the Public.”
Anyone who is not signed in, that clicks any link on this page, will be taken to the Login screen. All CFS Members should request a TNG account the first time they visit the Genealogy tab to establish their TNG Username and Password. You establish your account to TNG by clicking on the Register for a User Account link shown in the above image. Your registration request will be honored by our webmaster as long as your dues are up to date.
TNG is a very powerful genealogy system that is a little intimidating to new users. This guide will help you get started.
New and Existing CFS Members start with the following Role and Rights within TNG system: Submitter — can Submit changes to Tree/Branch manager to review.
Under certain conditions a CFS Member may be upgraded from Submitter to Contributor — this Role can Add any new information within their assigned Tree or Branch.
Under certain condition a CFS Member may be upgraded from Contributor to Editor — who can Add, Edit and Delete any information within their assigned Branch.
A CFS Tree Administrator can Add, Edit and Delete any information within their assigned Tree and Branches
After Your First Login
You will still be on the Public Home Page shown above, but all the links will now be active.
Searching For People
The first thing you will likely want to do is find one of your early ancestors and trace them to yourself. You do this with the predominate “Search” function located at the bottom left of the Public Home page. You can preform three types of searches:
- Individual Search: Fill in the First Name: and Last Name: fields and press the button.
- Advanced Search: Click on the “Advanced Search” link and search for specific details.
- Surnames Search: Click on the “Surnames” link, select a surname for all listing of every person in the system with that name.
Understanding the Person Page
Once you select an individual person by searching, you will end up on a page for that Individual’s Personal Information. This page also includes horizontal Menu Tabs for that person’s Family, Ancestors, Descendants, Relationship, Timeline, GEDCOM, and Suggest.
Contains all know information on the individual in the following order: Name, Date Born, Bio Info, Reference Number, Data Died, Person ID, Date Last Modified, Father, Mother, Date Father & Mother were Married, Family ID, and Sources (for the info found on the Individual page).
Brings you to a Family Chart of the Individual, their siblings, their parents, their aunts and uncles, and their grandparents (if known). You can navigate to any individual in the chart by clicking on their name. You can return to the original persons Individual page by clicking on their name or clicking the browser back arrow.
The Family page has two other Tabs in its own menu Tabs: Group Sheet and Suggest.
Group Sheet is provide a block of textual information for each the Individual’s parents, the Individual, and each sibling.
The Suggest Tab is a place to suggest changes if you have found an error or have new research info to add. The Tree/Branch manager for the person you make a suggestion for will review your suggestion and make the change or get back to you with the reason why they didn’t.
Brings you to a Pedigree chart (tree) starting with the Individual and showing their parents, grandparents, great grandparent, etc. — as for back in time as there is information in the system for the Individual’s ancestors. Clicking on any name in this chart will take you to that person’s Individual page.
Brings you to a Descendants chart (tree) starting with the Individual and showing their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, etc. — as for forward in time as there is information in the system for the Individual’s descendants. Clicking on any name in this chart will take you to that person’s Individual page. If the Individual never marries or had children entered into the system, there will only be one person on this chart — the Individual.
Bring you to a relationship calculation screen where you can find the relationship between any two people in your Tree/Branch.
Brings you to an interactive timeline where you can view the Individual’s Birthday in relation to all the other events entered into the system for that Individual relative to time. You may add other people to the timeline to help discover research clues based on time between life events.
Brings you to a page where you can generate a custom GEDCOM beginning with the Individual and including any number of generations of descendants from them. A GEDCOM is a file type recognized by ancestry tree software. Thus, if you were new to genealogy and wanted to build your own Clay Family Tree, say in the Roots Magic software application, you could save the relevant tree already existing with the CFS on TNG software, load it into Roots Magic, and save yourself hundreds of hours of work.
Brings you to a page where you can suggest changes if you have found an error or have new research info to Add. A Tree/Branch manager will review your suggestion and either make the change or get back to you with the reason why it wasn’t accepted.
